OptiLight IPL Therapy

Light-based relief for dry eyes and inflamed skin

If you struggle with red, irritated eyes, fluctuating vision, or constant burning and discomfort you may be dealing with dry eye disease.

OptiLight by Lumenis is the first and only FDA-approved light therapy for dry eye. It is designed to treat the root causes of meibomian gland dysfunction, ocular rosacea, and chronic inflammatory dry eye disease.

About OptiLight

What is OptiLight IPL?

OptiLight uses Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) to target inflammation along the eyelids and skin surrounding the eyes. It’s a non-invasive, light-based therapy that improves tear stability, reduces redness, and clears blocked oil glands.

Ideal IPL Candidates

OptiLight may be right for you if you have:

  • Chronically dry eyes
  • A desire for a bright, refreshed eyes and even skin tone
  • Redness or visible blood vessels along the eyelid margins
  • Contact lens discomfort or intolerance
  • Red, inflamed eyes at the end of the day
  • Rosacea or facial flushing (redness, warmth, or sensitivity in cheeks/nose)

How It Works

During treatment, pulses of light are applied to the skin around the eyes and upper face. This light energy:

  • Decreases inflammation
  • Reduces redness and abnormal blood vessels often seen in ocular rosacea
  • Targets demodex mites and bacteria that contribute to blepharitis
  • Restores natural meibomian gland function
  • Improves tear film quality and reduces evaporative dry eye symptoms
  • Brightens and whiter eyes

What to Expect

You'll relax in a treatment chair while a cool gel is applied to the skin below your eyes. Using a small handheld device, we'll deliver gentle pulses of light to the upper cheeks and around the eyelids. The treatment takes about 15-20 minutes, is non-invasive, and requires no downtime. After your visit, you'll need to avoid direct sun exposure and apply sunscreen daily to protect the treated skin and maintain your results.

OptiLight FAQ

How is OptiLight different from a “photofacial”?

While both treatments use Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) technology, OptiLight is the only FDA-Approved IPL designed specifically for the delicate eye area.

A traditional photofacial is a skin treatment focused on reducing sun spots and redness on the face, neck, chest, and/or hands. The IPL light energy penetrates the skin to break up pigment and stimulate collagen, leading to a clearer, smoother, more even-toned complexion over time.

OptiLight offers those same aesthetic benefits, while also treating inflammatory dry eye disease. It’s a dual-purpose treatment with both beauty and medical benefits, designed with ocular safety in mind.

Does OptiLight improve my appearance?

Yes. OptiLight reduces redness, broken capillaries, and uneven pigmentation around the eyes — helping the skin appear brighter and smoother, while softening the appearance of fine lines around the eyes. It also enhances the clarity and brightness of the eyes themselves by calming inflammation and improving tear quality. The result is a refreshed, more awake appearance with eyes that look clearer, whiter, and more vibrant.

Is OptiLight safe around the eyes?

Yes. Unlike cosmetic IPL devices, OptiLight is specifically designed and FDA-approved for use around the eyes. OptiLight uses a specialized handpiece, medical-grade eye protection, and carefully calibrated energy settings to safely treat the delicate skin around the eyes. Treatments are performed by an eye doctor and are quick, gentle, and well-tolerated with no downtime.

How many sessions will I need?

We recommend starting with a series of 4 treatments, spaced about 2-4 weeks apart. Results build gradually with each session. Many patients then continue with maintenance treatments every 6-12 months to preserve their results

Is there any downtime?

No downtime is required. OptiLight this gentle, non-invasive, and well-tolerated. You may experience some facial redness right after treatment, but this resolves quickly — most patients return to work immediately after. You’ll just want to protect your skin from the sun using 50+ SPF and avoid direct sunlight for a few days after each treatment.
